How can a location influence a film?

Locations can be key when trying to set the scene of a film. The location is the first thing that is seen in the opening shot of the film. When it comes to setting the genre of a film, the location has to be determined at the beginning of the planning.

The setting in 'This is England' shows that the film is set in the 1980's. The sights of the graffiti on the walls and the council estates also help the audience to understand the characters before being introduced to them.

Whereas in a film like Pride and Prejudice, the setting is completely different. You can instantly tell that the characters are going to be upper class and be able to afford nice clothing and other elements.



By seeing these pictures, you can tell how much the film relies on the correct location because otherwise the whole story can become confusing to the audience and also elements like the costume and makeup won't match the scene. It can also be used to establish the time period the film is set in.
